Usually figural Newell Post Lamps from this period (c. 1870) are made of white metal. This one is solid Bronze. This is a Museum Quality example of Victorian Exoticism in the Eastlake Reform period. The Victorian period can be thought of as two halves. The Revival Period where the design of most of the fixtures hark back to earlier periods set by mostly European sensibilities. The Reform period is more distinct and represents the sentiments of the Eastlake Design Movement and the larger all encompassing Aesthetic Movement where the motto was " Art for Arts Sake". This motto created a very big discussion during the period. 30 inches tall with 9 inch base this Figural Phoenix is just an incredible work of art. It was originally powered by Gas and Electrified at the turn of the 20th Century.
