This restored antique 1880's Eastlake Longwy Gas Chandelier is in
excellent used original condition. The fixture may be attributed to
the pre-emminent American gas lighting manufacturers Thackera, Buck
and Company, ca. 1881, Thackera, Sons and Company, 1882, both of
Philadelphia or McKenney and Waterbury Company of Boston. The
chandelier is constructed from spun bodies, round and square tubing,
bent and twisted flat strapping and decorative castings, entirely out
of polished red brass. The main body and round tubing are both
decorated with concentric rings.
It is designed in the Eastlake Anglo - Japanese style with a thin
open frame composed of with small square tubing arms, round tubing
and spun bodies with concentric rings, bent and twisted strapping
forming a cage around the oriental-style French Longwy brush pot
cylinder insert from Longwy, France, and fine, low relief decorative
castings. The flat two-sided bas relief castings on each bent straps
have stylized oriental flowers.
The Longwy ceramic insert is held in place on the center stem by a
pair of spun brass bodies. It is vividly decorated with various
natural forms of the Mediterranean acanthus plant in the classical
manner against a turquoise blue ground.
