Very nice set of Aesthetic Period Gas Sconces. They are from around 1870.

You can see the effect of the Industrial Revolution on the designs of arcs and circles like sprockets, cogs, bearings. All stylized and decorated with stylize clovers. The shades cut glass and deep etched are very nice in their simplicity to go along with the Eastlake and Aesthetic reaction to Victorian ornamentation. They are not simple by modern standards but in the period this was quite a step down. Charles Locke Eastlake had just written the book "Hints on Household Taste" and the Aesthetic Movement was busy contemplating the big discussion "Art for Arts Sake". There was a new sensibility on the rise on the part of the people who felt represented by these ideas and these sconces were an expression of it.
